So how often should MY pet be groomed?
Well, that depends.
How often your dog or cat should be professionally groomed depends on a number of factors. Below, I will breakdown my professional recommendations and few important things to consider.
If there is a health or behavioral issue with your pet,
I always recommend you speak with your
veterinarian prior to your appointment and follow their
recommended treatment plan.

In Short:
-
Long hair dogs, I recommend every 2 weeks
with a deep conditioner.1 spruce and one Neaten each month.
-
Short Fur/hair every 2-6 weeks.
-
Cats 4-6 weeks.
-
If you are brushing daily, triiming nails and giving baths in between yourself, 8 weeks is okay.

Skin health
-
If your dog has healthy normal skin, I recommend grooming every 2-6 weeks. I recommend adding a deep conditioner for every grooming but especially if you choose 2 weeks, to restore moisture balance and prevent drying out your pet's skin and coat.
-
For cats with healthy skin and regular self-grooming and brushing habits, 4-6 weeks.
-
For mild dry/oily skin issues, I recommend a deep conditioner to add moisture back to the dry/oily skin, consult your veterinarian for skin evaluation and a treatment plan. I f
-
If the skin issue is acute, frequent medicated baths may be recommended with a prescription shampoo or other topical treatments.
-
If skin issue is mild, I would recommend skin balancing treatments (deep conditioner, aloe treatment, oatmeal bath, flea&tick, etc).

Coat type (Fur vs hair, wire coated, double-coated)
-
Short to medium length, smooth-coated fur is best with baths every 2-6 weeks depending on hair/fur length, nail length and ear health, and home maintenance. (Examples of these breeds would be Labrador, Pitbull, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Greyhound, Rottweiler, beagle, pug, etc.)
-
Double and multi-coated coats thrive with monthly DE-shedding treatments. A Deshedding treatment consists of a gentle clarifying shampoo, followed by a De-shedding conditioning treatment. This specialty conditioner helps loosen impacted, ready-to-shed fur that builds up in the coats. Then followed by a high velocity blow out, and a thorough brushing.
-
If you are unable to maintain daily brushing, nail trimmings, anal gland, ear cleaning and plucking, I recommend staying between 2-4 weeks.

Coat length and density
Impacted fur is meant to keep them cool in arctic weather. Since we don't get very much of that here in South Florida, it's best we keep their coats well-ventilated year-round, so they don't overheat in our tropical weather. A 2 to 4-week schedule is recommended.
Examples of these breeds are Husky, Corgi, Shepherds, Collies, Mountain dogs, etc.)
Climate
Consider the weather while also protecting them from sunburn, overheating and hot sidewalks. so depending on the coat density, the length should leave at least a light cover of fur.
Double coated pooches still deserve to play outside. These heavily coated dogs are usually high energy and require play time, so a well-ventilated coat will help prevent overheating.

Regular brushing habits
Daily, once a week, never. if you tend to never really get around to it, I recommend either taking them short and booking monthly appointments or if left longer than 1/2" twice a month., alternating Neaten and Spruce.)
Lifestyle
Couch potato, frequent park, swimmer, beach, dog park, etc.
We have to remember that we are taking our pets out to potty several
times a day collecting all sorts of earth in their paws. There are also lots
of reasons we would want to give more frequent baths, so speak with the
groomer for the best recommendation for your pet.
